Our Automation team in our Wixom, MI location is currently looking for a bright, ambitious Manager, Automation Engineering who enjoys team work and on-going challenging projects.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of a group of mechanical designers within the automation engineering department to design the system solutions that meet the customer's requirements.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Responsibilities:

* Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of the mechanical design department using specialized knowledge of l engineering principles and conceptual design and development of tooling, machine design/layout and associated peripheral equipment.

* Assess workload, assign staff to engineering projects, and oversee the completion of drawings according to specific deadlines and project schedules.

* Review project schedules on a timely basis to ensure the automation engineering portion of projects are completed on time and take corrective action, coordinating with other departments as required.

* Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.Keep track of engineering change notices through designers and project managers.

* Conduct employee performance evaluations, recommend salary adjustments, and initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, new hires, discharges and disciplinary measures for staff reporting to him/her.

* Act as main contact for specific projects and/or key customers, travel to customer sites and work closely with their engineering staff.

* Provide technical sales support to the sales and marketing department when quoting new business.

* Interview and select applicants on their technical qualifications and suitability for positions in the department when hiring new personnel.

* Set objectives on a yearly basis that align with business unit objectives and track progress throughout the year on those objectives.

* Support the business unit quality system by maintaining ISO procedures, conducting a departmental audit and responding to NCR's.

* Measure departmental throughput and rework and others errors to develop improvement plans where required.

* Support employee training by analyzing needs on an annual basis.

* With the General Manager, collaborate on developing a departmental budget on an annual basis.

* Develop outside suppliers in anticipation of overload situations.

* Maintain a co-operative working relationship with your counterparts in other ATS business units

* Advocate and foster a team environment within both the department and throughout the business unit.

* Encourage and mentor employees to ensure that departmental morale and efficiency are maintained at the highest level

* Based on business goals and annual growth, establish resource requirements skills and organizational needs that will sustain adequate capacity and leadership within the department.

* Emphasize continuous improvement as a long term goal and with the General Manager, implement procedures and programs to achieve continuous improvement in this area.

* Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.

* Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

A post secondary Technologist or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering, Physics Engineering Science or equivalent.

Experience:

A minimum of 10 years of related supervisory experience (or equivalent) in mechanical or systems design in a custom automation environment is required. A thorough understanding of robotics, machine controls, structured problem solving, statistical analysis, precision engineering principles and GAMP is necessary. Good written and oral communication skills and ability to lead and work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team are essential.
