**Job Summary**
This position is dedicated 80% time to implementing the communication strategy for the executive vice dean for research/chief scientific officer, the basic science departments and research departments of Michigan Medicine. The incumbent will also devote up to 10% of his/her time working with Michigan Medicine's government affairs staff to tell Michigan Medicine research positions and stories to elected and appointed government officials.
The remaining amount of the incumbent's time will be spent communicating findings and work of Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) members, working closely with the lead communication manager for IHPI.
Assists the director (TBD) of advocacy, policy and research communication as needed, positioning Michigan Medicine as a key leader in basic science research and training.
The incumbent is responsible for enhancing and managing the reputation of Michigan Medicine s basic science and research departments with the media, policymakers, industry and professional association members, government officials, community leaders and with other external stakeholders including communicating the results of its research, the expertise and work of its staff and faculty, and for positioning Michigan Medicine as an exceptional potential employer, thought leader, health science institute(s) and producer of outstanding science to benefit people worldwide.
Incumbent assists in enhancing the brand attributes of Michigan Medicine s basic science community among key external constituents via social media, involvement in professional associations, through speeches, via meetings and exhibits, by launching community engagement strategies and by using traditional mass and scientific media.
**10% -** Incumbent works across departmental lines with colleagues in other research departments, institutes and offices on to create unified U-Michigan research communication strategy, tactics and communication effectiveness measurements.
**50% -** Incumbent will proactively communicate leading edge research, partnerships and scientific research collaborations with other institutions, health care innovation entities, editorial positions, scholarly papers and other works, etc. via specialty, trade, health care, education, research, mass and social media, among others -- and serve as a primary communication counselor to the chief scientific officer and basic science chairs as needed.
The incumbent will also work strategically with industry and professional associations, policymakers at local, state and federal levels as needed, with staffers of elected and appointed officials as needed in conjunction with government relations staffs in order to communicate positions, build communication partnerships and collaborations, gain and maintain critical support, and generate public and industry interest in and support for our basic science and research work.
**20% -** In collaboration with brand managers and institutional positioning managers, incumbent will develop a multi-year measurable communication plan that includes community outreach, content generation and story placement, policy and advocacy communication targets, constituent relationship goals, health care industry outreach and thought leadership measures, visibility at professional association meetings, positioning research leaders and their work, plus enhancing the image, public outreach, and reputation of Michigan Medicine s research and basic science operations.
**20% -** Incumbent will also communicate the work of the key Medical School faculty members who are members of IHPI to and among key constituents, to be determined.
**Additional Resources:** Incumbent will have at her/his disposal the human resources and tangible physical assets of the Department of Communication for work with IHPI as well as with office of chief scientific officer. She will coordinate her efforts closely with the director of institutional positioning, chief government relations officer, chief communication officer and IHPI leadership as needed and appropriate.

**Required Qualifications***
+ Minimum 8 years professional communication experience telling stories about and for research departments, institutes, associations, universities.
+ Exceptional abilities to translate complex subjects into lay language.
+ Minimum BS or BA degree. Proficient speaker and presenter.
+ Preference given to science writers or editors.
+ Must be comfortable telling stories in digital vehicles notably via social media and blogs.
+ Creativity a must with the ability to translate complex science for lay audiences.
+ Strong abilities to build relationships and provide counsel to clients.
+ Preference given to candidates who are highly creative with a proclivity for helping others understand complex subjects.
**Desired Qualifications***
Fluency in languages in addition to English a plus.
Advanced degree preferred.

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidates education and experience.
