Job Description and Responsibilities:
The Applications Engineer II will take an innovation lead to propel new products to market as well as improve existing tool platforms. Day to day activities will include execution of laser application trials and testing in a lab and manufacturing environment. This role works closely with the commercial and engineering teams to organize both long and short term projects as well as external customers to ensure the viability and customer acceptance of new systems. This role is critical to the generation of new application processes and system designs, which drives the creation of new revenue opportunities for the company.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Execute project management for the development of new applications and related solutions which will bring new business opportunities for our tools in the material processing markets.
Work in collaboration with the Engineering Design Team to optimize Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems, CNC system strategies, PLC systems, and other tool design elements.
Provide technical sales support in assessing potential application of company products to meet customer needs. This may include occasional travel to a customer site and international travel to Coherent sites.
Deliver technical report documentation of lab and product management related activities.
Provide follow-up support in disseminating technical information on specific applications.
Assist marketing management in all pre-sale or post-sale application related problems, in the applications laboratory, or on site.
Apply laser theory/operation and industrial applications of welding, fusion cutting, surface modification, and other material processing.
Design and build prototype tooling for lab and to communicate salient build specifications to design team to assist with tool builds.
Training customers on use of equipment and applications in lab or on site.
Act as a liaison between customer and coherent to assist with redesign of customer parts to facilitate laser processing.
Education and Work Experience:
Requires a four year college degree in a technical or engineering field, or a minimum of 12 years equivalent work experience in an engineering role
Other Job Information: Desired Qualifications
Experience working with lasers, optics or material processing in a laboratory environment and a strong technical knowledge of industrial laser products.
Programming knowledge of G-code and PLC systems.
Competent in working with image, vector, and CAD files such as jpg, tif, bmp, step, dxf, dwg in programs like Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, AutoCad, Cagila 2D/3D, and post-processor programs.
Working knowledge of tooling, fixturing, and indexing precision mechanical alignment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills ability to effectively communicate new ideas or concepts; ability to influence others, without direct authority, to gain support.
Imaginative & open can come up with and consider new or unique solutions and approaches to problems; open to considering and trying other s new or unique ideas or solutions.
Hands-on tool and equipment experience.
Competent in Microsoft Office products and efficient in email and internet.
Proven oral and written skills required.
Comfortable working with machinist level precision and accuracy best practices.
Previous experience interacting directly with customers in the sales/pre-sale stage.
