Job Summary The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn has an exciting new opportunity for a CECS Student Design and Fabrication Lab Manager. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing the use of the maker spaces supporting instructional activities and faculty research projects, instituting best practices in industrial and research operations for safety, making decisions for equipment and supplies for the Center, effectively deploying resources, and training of participating students and student project teams. The selected candidate will play a valuable role and mentoring students (and facilitating the mentorship by others) especially as part of competition teams, project teams, etc. This positions reports to the CECS Associate Dean for Undegraduate Education. CECS serves a diverse and rapidly growing student body. Its mission is to be a leader in providing quality undergraduate and graduate programs in an environment integrated with engineering practice, research and continuing professional education in close partnership with the industrial community. As part of that mission, the College recently completed two state-of-the-art renovations of its Professional and Student Shop and Student Project Center, which provide a maker space for hands-on, collaborative learning that allows students to design, build, and test their creations. These work spaces empower students to enhance their understanding of engineering theory and apply their knowledge in a practical setting. Professional staff in these work spaces provide critical fabrication activities in support of faculty research projects. Responsibilities* Principal Duties and Responsibilities of this position are to: * Implement and manage an industrial safety program and professional safety culture within the shop and student center. Overall responsibility for safe operations of facilities, including day, evening, and weekend hours. Interface with CECS Assistant Director for Laboratory Safety and Facilities. * Mentor/coach students in relevant best practices. * Develop and manage a highly flexible work environment that includes the best practices of workplace organization. The Center should inherently educate students in lean principles. * Establish a regular maintenance program for Center equipment. * Supervise the staff (technicians, student and other temporary staff, and volunteers working with students) to ensure safe and efficient use of the facilities. * Conduct or arrange training opportunities for fabrication techniques (eg machining, welding, woodwork, composites, electronics, etc.) and other short courses (eg CAD) necessary and useful to our students. * Balance the schedules and needs of curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular, and research support demands on the Center's facilities. * Interact with other units to maximize the efficiency of spaces for fabrication needs. * Conduct other special projects as assigned. Required Qualifications* * Experience in managing a research development lab, machine shop, fabrication lab, or manufacturing facility is necessary, as is actual fabrication experience. * Successful management of a safety program and culture. * Strong organizational skills. * Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken). * Ability to effectively manage/coordinate the activities of others. * Ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including students. * Minimum of five years or equivalent professional experience. * Experience in a higher education environment. Desired Qualifications* * Experience with asset utilization, capacity optimization, efficient scheduling, and lean practices. * Experience with OSHA/OSEH requirements.
