**Job Description Details:**
**General Summary**
The Statistical SAS Programmer will perform data exploration and analytics using healthcare data for ad-hoc and recurring projects. This position works closely with clinical and supportive hospital staff to improve the quality of care of patients, identify effect sizes of risk factors, and suggest best practices . Statistical analytics are used in conjunction with efficient and robust macro programming of big data.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
1. Proficient in the use of SAS software to create and analyze datasets from multiple, primary sources; Programming skills should be sufficient for modular programming to support recurring production-level datasets;
a. Write SQL queries for data manipulation, sorting, summarizing and reporting.
b. Reviews, analyzes and modifies programming systems including coding, testing, debugging and documenting programs.
c. Uses standard SAS macros to comply with department standards.
d. Checks for validity and reproducibility of quality/safety measures when indicated from multiple data sources.
e. Ensures completeness and accuracy of reports.
f. Uses additional reporting tools such as Business Objects, Excel, etc. as needed.
g. Maintains routine reporting and data load processes.
h. Documents projects and code extensively this includes inserting comments in code to explain the purpose of code at each step, creating documentation/instructions that can be understood/used with ease by team members in absence of programmer, creating documentation that enables team members to understand purpose of program/project, data sources used, nuances of project, etc.
2. Tabulate and explain descriptive statistics.
3. Run inferential statistics.
4. Collaborate with clinical staff to understand real-world mechanisms to accurately formulate questions to the data.
5. Develop study designs to evaluate interventions, as well as perform statistical power and sample size calculations.
6. Evaluate suggested statistical models to ensure proper conclusions.
7. Conduct statistical analysis of study data and present it in the form of report tables and graphs.
8. Perform quality control of statistical programs.
9. Present findings to a non-statistical audience.
10. Produce graphical and other visual displays of data to guide the decision-maker.
11. Collaborate with team members on team projects and provide reporting support for web applications.
a. Assist staff in understanding healthcare data and assist in the training of new staff members.
b. Provide programming and analytical expertise on team projects;
12. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
13. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
14. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. f
15. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
**REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE**
Education: Bachelor's degree in biostatistics or statistics, or equivalent quantitative field. Master's preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
**REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
1. Proficient in SAS and SQL (preferred); Proficiency in Base SAS, SAS QC (preferred), SAS Graph, ODS, macro programming
2. Knowledge of statistics
3. Understanding of healthcare data - inpatient, outpatient or managed care (preferred)
4. Ability to work on multiple, concurrent projects, perform a variety of tasks
5. Ability to work well with others
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
7. Strong attention to detail
8. Ability to quickly adapt to and handle changing priorities
9. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goal 10. Ability to anticipate customer needs and questions
