Job Summary The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) is a unit of the Office of Research (UMOR) that assists faculty in obtaining support for their research by overseeing proposal processing and submission; reviewing, negotiating, and accepting agreements on behalf of the university; and working with units across campus to administer awards. The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects enables and safeguards the conduct of research and other sponsored activity for the University of Michigan. We apply specialized regulatory, statutory, and organizational knowledge in a timely and professional manner in order to balance the University's mission, the sponsor's objectives, and the investigator's intellectual pursuits. Job Function/Duties Under direct supervision, provide administrative support to a small group of Project Representatives within a designated team of ORSP by processing sponsored proposals and awards including, but not limited to, the review of proposals to ensure accuracy and consistency with sponsor requirements; the preparation and processing of proposal packages for authorized signature; the submission of proposal packages using various means (eg, electronic systems such as or Fastlane, email, US mail or courier); the processing of award notices, hardship accounts, and project changes; the processing of project closeouts, turndowns and withdrawals; the maintenance of complete and accurate proposal files in an electronic database, and other assignments to maintain business operations. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt. * Cultivate an exceptional work environment by consistently putting forth an optimistic and positive attitude, a willingness to assist others, and an excellent work ethic. * Access external databases and websites such as, eCommons, and sponsor specific sites for information about applications and sponsor requirements, and to complete sponsor required registrations. * Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and sponsors regarding proposal and award preparation, sponsor information, guidelines, reports, project closings, University procedures and project activities. * Participate in training and development activities, including meetings, regarding processes and procedures of ORSP and other units involved in sponsored project administration. * Provide clerical and other administrative support for a single or small group of assigned Project Representatives. Required Qualifications* * High school diploma or equivalent. * Ability to exercise independent judgment and employ sound reasoning skills. * Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to work well with a diverse population. * Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment. * Detail oriented. * Ability to input and manage data with a high degree of accuracy. * Ability to multitask and prioritize deadline-driven workloads. * Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure. * Ability to work with minimal supervision. * Excellent communication skills. * Ability to read, understand and apply complex directions. * Working knowledge of standard office computers, office machines (ie, copier, scanner), office telephones, common office software applications (ie, Microsoft Word), email, web browsers. Desired Qualifications* * Bachelor's degree. * 1+ years of experience in an office environment. * Familiarity with University of Michigan policies and procedures related to employee conduct and stewardship. * Working knowledge of the University of Michigan electronic Research Proposal Management (eRPM) system. * Experience with sponsored projects, budgets, project/grants, indirect costs, and cost share. * Familiarity with University of Michigan policies and procedures related to sponsored projects. * Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Suite of products including Gmail Background Screening The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.
